Description

Please note that in Ayurveda Bombax ceiba (syn.Bombax malabaricum, Salmalia malabarica ) is known as red variety of Semul(other name simul), while Eriodendron anafracuosum is different, but this is also known as Semul white variety. Bombax ceiba is found in many parts of India, Srilanka and Myanmar, Indonesia, and China.

This is the description for Bombax ceiba. This tree is a member of Bombacaceae plant family.

This is a deciduous tree of about 10 to 30 metres height. The bark is gray,glabrous, the prickles are conical. The leaves are crowded at the end of the branches, petiolate, digitately 5 to 7 foliate. The leaflets are ovate lanceolate or elliptic lanceolate and glabrous. The flowers are sessile, crowded at the end of leafless branches. The capsules are about 5 valved. The valves are ovate lanceolate, woody, rough, glabrous, dark reddish brown and minutely apiculate. The flowering season is February to June.

Usage

In Ayurveda the leaves,seeds and the roots are used as stimulant tonic, astringent, aphrodisiac, and blood purifier.
