Description
Purple orchid is a tree common in India. It is found in many parts of South East Asia.
This tree is a member of Ceaesalpiniaceae plant family.
This tree grows to a height of about 6 metres, it has dark brown or grey bark. The leaves are suborbicular, coriaceous, deeply lobbed, cordate at the base and petiolate. The flowers are 3 to 8 cms. across, in 5-10 cms. long terminal recemes. The flowers are bright reddish purple. The pods are linear, flat,apiculate reddish brown and woody pendant. The seeds are glabose, smooth and glabrous. The flowering season is from September to February.

Usage
In Ayurveda the roots and the bark are used for treatment of diarrhoea, and diabetes, also bark is used as astringent, anthelmintic and anti-inflammatory.
